Shure MV7 vs SM7B: The Gain Problem, Two Answers

Unless the recording chain already has a clean preamp with 60 dB of gain in it, buy the MV7+. The SM7B needs about 70 dB to bring a spoken voice up to line level, though $140 of the price difference between these two disappears the moment that has to be bought separately. The MV7+ carries 36 dB of its own gain, converts to USB at 24 bits, and puts out 4 dB more on XLR before any of that's switched on. Buy the SM7B when the preamp exists, the room is treated and nothing about the signal path should be decided by firmware.

One note on the name

Shure's own MV7 address now serves the MV7+, and the B&H listing under the old MV7 order code shows the MV7+ as well. The plain MV7 has been replaced rather than discontinued, so every figure on this page is the current model's.

The gain problem, and how each one answers it

The SM7B publishes −59 dBV/Pa, which is 1.12 mV/Pa and the lowest output in the row of 17 dynamics with comparable sensitivity. Speech at a hand's width is roughly 0.2 pascals, so the capsule delivers around 0.22 millivolts. And a recording chain wants something near half a volt. That's the arithmetic behind the 70 dB the SM7B asks for. The newer model answers it twice. On XLR it publishes −55 dBV/Pa, or 1.78 mV/Pa, which is 4 dB more from the same sound pressure and lands a hair under the 1.8 mV/Pa median of the dynamic set. On USB-C it skips the question. 36 dB of adjustable gain and a 24-bit converter are inside the body, so the microphone arrives at the computer already at working level.

Four decibels isn't the whole story, and it's worth being precise about scale. Four decibels off 70 leaves 66, which is still more than a cheap interface has to spare. So the USB path is what removes the requirement, not the sensitivity difference.

What the built-in electronics cost

Everything the newer model adds sits in the signal path. The compressor, limiter, low-cut, noise cancellation and presets are software, applied by firmware on the way out, and the mute is a capacitive pad rather than a switch. On the SM7B the two controls are mechanical. A low-cut filter and a mid-range EQ, set with a screwdriver behind a cover plate, do the same thing to the signal every time.

That difference isn't about sound quality. It's about who decides. So a firmware chain can be updated, misconfigured or reset, and it needs power. A pair of switches behind a plate can't be any of those things.

The MV7+ also draws USB power for its digital half, while the SM7B needs nothing at all. Used purely on XLR it works unpowered, though the DSP, the gain and the converter are simply not available.

20 kHz against 16, and one published SPL

The SM7B publishes 50 Hz to 20 kHz and the MV7+ 50 Hz to 16 kHz, neither with a measurement level, so the 4 kHz can't be checked against another maker's sheet. Within Shure's own line it still points somewhere. The broadcast model claims the wider range and the podcast model the narrower one.

But the maximum SPL runs the other way. The MV7+ publishes 128 dB and the SM7B publishes nothing at all, which is unusual. Of the 28 dynamics collected here only five state a maximum SPL. And the cheaper of these two is among those five.

Output impedance differs by more than a factor of two. On a short desk cable neither figure matters. But on a long run the lower one is the safer source.

Weight, and what holds it

At 573.5 g the MV7+ is 194 g lighter than the SM7B's 767 g, and both are heavy by handheld standards because neither is a handheld. The SM48 weighs 370 g and the SM58 327. These two are desk microphones that assume a boom arm.

And that weight is the reason a cheap arm sags with either one, and the reason the SM7B in particular is usually seen on a heavy stand rather than a spring arm.

Six ratings against 151

The SM7B carries 151 ratings at 4.8 and the MV7+ six at the same 4.8. But what the six do describe is the setup rather than the sound. "This is my 2nd Shure mic and I'm a loyal customer and fan. The setup was easy and they now have an app. to help you set the levels just how you like them," reads the five-star entry from 14 April 2026. Six isn't a sample. The number reflects how recently the model arrived rather than anything about it.

The counts show which microphone's been in the market long enough to accumulate evidence. On the SM7B, 151 ratings with two below three stars is a distribution worth reading. On the newer one there's nothing yet to read.

Which one to buy

So one of these microphones removes a problem, and the other refuses to introduce one. The MV7+ for a desk that plugs into a laptop. It removes the gain problem entirely on USB, arrives 4 dB hotter on XLR, weighs 194 g less, costs $140 less, but publishes a maximum SPL its rival doesn't.

The SM7B for a chain that already has clean gain, and for anyone who wants the signal path to contain no firmware. What the older microphone offers isn't performance but permanence. Nothing in it can be changed by an update, and nothing in it can stop being supported. Its range reaches 4 kHz higher on paper, its impedance is lower for long cable runs, and its two mechanical switches do the same thing forever.

And neither is a portable microphone, and neither answers a stage. For that the handheld pair from the same maker costs a quarter as much.
