Sennheiser MD441 Review: $1,249 Microphone, 30 Hz to 20 kHz Response

$1,249.00 is the highest price among the 28 dynamic microphones collected here, and the next figure down the list is $449.00. Second place doesn't come within a factor of two. What the money buys isn't output and not bandwidth. It buys two tone controls on a body that only three dynamics here can match, a capsule hung on springs inside the housing, and a coil wound to cancel mains hum. Because everything the sheet publishes about level and range is available for a fifth of the price, skip it if a switch on a preamp would do the same job,.



$1,249.00, and the $449.00 that comes next
The list of dynamics here runs from $19.90 to $1,249.00, and the top of it's lonely. Two microphones share second place at $449.00 — Sennheiser's own MD 421-II and an Electro-Voice RE20 — and the MD 441-U costs 2.8 times either one.
Cross the boundary into condensers and the price stops looking strange. An AKG C414 XLII on the same shop lists at $1,299.00, so this dynamic sits $50 under a multi-pattern studio condenser. That's the company it keeps on a price list, not the company it keeps on a spec sheet. Sennheiser lists it as a current product with a two-year warranty and its own page in the catalogue, and the shop shows it in stock. The price isn't a collector's markup on something withdrawn; it's what the microphone costs new today.
1.8 mV/Pa is the median of the class
Sennheiser publishes 1.8 mV/Pa in a free field, no load, at 1 kHz. The median for the 17 dynamics here whose output converts to millivolts is 1.8, and this one ranks ninth of the seventeen. So the dearest dynamic on the list puts out almost exactly the middle voltage.
The quick guide adds what the web page leaves off, namely ±2 dB. A tolerance is the difference between a number that describes this microphone and a number that describes the model, but it's missing from the page most buyers read. And that matters because output is the number most often used to justify a price. A Sennheiser e935 at 2.8 mV/Pa is the loudest dynamic here and costs $199.95. Anyone buying a microphone to spare a preamp is buying the wrong one at this price.
Nominal impedance is 200 Ω with a minimum terminating impedance of 1000 Ω, and the quick guide repeats both. No shop listing in this collection publishes impedance at all, so the only comparisons available are inside Sennheiser's own sheets: the e-series handhelds read 350 Ω, and the MD 421-II reads 250 Ω on its current specification and 200 Ω on the previous one. Neither figure needs checking against a modern preamp, but none of them can be quoted without saying which document it came from.
Two tone switches, one of them with five positions
Two controls sit on the body. There's a five-position low-frequency contour switch and a two-position treble switch Sennheiser calls Brilliance. Five of the 28 dynamics here publish a tone control at all, and three publish two of them: this one, a Samson Q9U at $149.99, and an SM7B with its bass rolloff and presence switch. A five-position bass switch is a different instrument from a two-position one. It sets how much proximity effect survives at a given working distance, and five steps mean the setting can follow the source instead of the source following the setting. The MD 421-II offers the same five positions, but nothing else in this collection publishes a bass control with more than one setting.
Inside, the capsule hangs on a damped spring suspension and a hum-compensating coil sits behind it. Neither shows on the outside, though, and there isn't a published figure attached to either, and there's no handling-noise specification and no rejection figure for the coil.
The quick guide labels the low-frequency positions M and S, for music and speech, which is the only place Sennheiser says what the five steps are for. It also draws the placement the microphone was designed around, aimed at about 60 degrees, closer than 15 cm, with 5 cm of clearance. And none of that reaches the listing, though all of it decides more than the tone switches do.
30 Hz to 20 kHz, matched on paper by an $86 microphone
The published range is 30 to 20,000 Hz with no measurement condition, so a rival's pair of numbers means nothing next to it. Ranked inside this collection, it's the widest span any dynamic here publishes except one. A RODE PodMic at $86.00 claims 20 Hz to 20 kHz on its card, though RODE's own page for that microphone gives 50 Hz to 15 kHz, so the widest dynamic span in the collection belongs to the dealer rather than to the maker.
Four dynamics here reach 20 kHz on paper and three of them cost under $450, but only three of the four survive a check against the manufacturer. So bandwidth isn't what separates this price from the rest of the list, and a buyer reading the range alone would have no way to tell these microphones apart.
But the bottom is rarer. Three dynamics here start below 40 Hz: this one and the MD 421-II at 30 Hz, and the same $86.00 PodMic at 20 Hz on a card RODE doesn't back. The other 24 begin at 40 Hz or above, and the two that go deepest inside Sennheiser's line are the two that carry the bass switch.
421 g on the page, 450 g in the maker's own guide
And the disagreement about weight isn't between the maker and the shop. It's inside Sennheiser. The catalogue page says 421 g, while the quick guide shipped with the microphone says approximately 450 g, which is exactly the 15.9 oz the shop prints. Two of the three documents agree, but the odd one out is the manufacturer's own web page.
Twenty-nine grams isn't a rounding error, though the direction of the error is the interesting part, since the dealer that gets blamed for retyping figures is here the one carrying the number that the printed manual confirms.
But either figure puts it in the heavy half of the class. The body is 270 mm long and 33 by 36 mm in section, a flat wedge rather than a tube, and the longest dynamic in this collection by 53 mm over an RE20. It's shaped to be aimed from a stand, not held.
There's no maximum SPL from either source. That's the normal state for dynamics in this collection, where only 5 state one at all and the median of those is 140 dB. The top of that short row is a 60 g Sennheiser e604 at 160 dB, published by its dealer rather than by Sennheiser. On this model neither party publishes anything, so the loudest source the microphone will take is a matter for the manual rather than the sheet, and the manual answers it with a distance instead of a number.

Where $1,249 for a dynamic makes sense
A five-position bass switch and a treble switch on the microphone itself, with a supercardioid pattern and 30 Hz at the bottom. That combination exists twice in this collection, but the other instance is the MD 421-II at a third of the price with one switch instead of two.
It doesn't make sense bought on output, on bandwidth or on maximum level, because the sheet puts it at the median on the first and in a crowd on the second and silent on the third. So every argument for the price rests on what's adjustable at the capsule rather than at the desk.
So the comparison worth making is against a condenser at the same money, where the trade is a switchable pattern and a much higher output against a transducer that needs no phantom power and shrugs off a snare drum. The same maker sells an e609 for $79, which is the other end of the same catalogue and a useful reminder of what the badge alone isn't worth.
