RODE NT1 Signature Review: 4 dBA of Self-Noise for $141, and the Kit It Ships In

Four decibels A-weighted is the self-noise figure, and it's the lowest of the thirty-three microphones in this collection that publish one. The next quietest is an AKG C414 at 6 dB, but that costs $1,299. RODE's own datasheet goes further and calls it the quietest studio condenser in the world, though that's the rare marketing line a comparison set can at least test.
$141.00 buys the microphone, an SM6 shock mount with a detachable pop filter and an XLR cable. It fits a treated room where the source is quiet and the electronics must not add anything. It's the wrong microphone for a loud source that needs a pad, because there's no switch on it at all.



4 dBA, and what a number that low is for
Self-noise is the hiss the electronics and the capsule make with nothing reaching the microphone, and it sets the floor under every quiet passage. Thirty-three microphones here publish the figure, and this one is at the bottom of that list, though the shop's record is the only one that drops the A-weighting RODE states in both its own documents.
And the gap to the rest of the price bracket is the interesting part. A Neumann TLM102 publishes 12 dB at $799, and the two microphones above this one on the quiet list cost $1,299 and $1,295. Nothing else near that money comes close. A Neumann U 87 Ai publishes three noise figures rather than one, 15, 12 and 14 dB-A for its three patterns, which is the other reason a single-column quiet list has to be read carefully.
So what that buys is headroom at the quiet end rather than better sound. A whispered voice, a fingerpicked guitar, a room tone recorded deliberately: those are where 4 dB and 12 dB differ audibly, but speech at a normal level isn't.
142 dB, with no threshold attached
Maximum SPL is 142 dB, and no source says at what distortion it was measured. Three documents were checked, namely the product page, the shop listing and RODE's own datasheet, and all three print the bare figure. This isn't a dealer dropping a condition in transcription; the maker never publishes one.
Seventeen of the 33 condensers here that publish a maximum SPL name the threshold. This one doesn't, so its 142 dB can't be set against an AT2020's 144 dB at 1 per cent or against a Neumann's 144 at half a per cent. Two of those three numbers are comparable with each other, whereas this one stands alone.
And the asymmetry is worth naming. RODE documents the quiet end more completely than almost anyone in this collection and leaves the loud end bare, which is the opposite of the usual pattern where the impressive number gets the condition and the ordinary one doesn't.
25 mV/Pa, and −32 dB re 1 V/Pa
Sensitivity is published twice on the same line: −32 dB relative to one volt per pascal, and 25 mV at 94 dB SPL, with a tolerance of ±2 dB at 1 kHz. Both say the same thing, and the second is the first already converted. That places it twentieth of the 30 condensers here whose output converts to millivolts, above a median of 19.98. A hot output and a very low noise floor together mean a preamp contributes less of the total noise than usual, which is the practical form that noise figure takes.
A tolerance figure is rarer than it looks. But most sensitivity values in this collection arrive as a single number with nothing to say how far a given unit may sit from it.
What comes in the box
On both its product page and its datasheet RODE lists the microphone, an SM6 shock mount with a detachable pop filter, and an XLR cable. The shop listing has no box-contents block at all, so a buyer comparing prices on that page alone can't see what is being compared. And that matters at this price. A shock mount and a pop filter bought separately would add most of a third to the total, and a comparison against a bare microphone at the same money isn't a comparison of equals. A Samson Q2U is sold the same way, as a pack whose price covers more than the capsule.
The capsule itself is named: HF6, one inch, with a ten-year warranty on the microphone.
Two current NT1s, and which one this is
The shop sells two: this Signature Series at $141.00 and an NT1 5th Generation at $214.00 with both XLR and USB outputs, 32-bit float recording and sample rates to 192 kHz. Owners rate the newer one 4.6 across 20 ratings against 4.9 across 13 here.
Anyone searching for a plain NT1 will land on one of the two. The difference is not the capsule but what leaves the body, since this one is analogue only and the 5th Generation carries a converter that a computer can read directly. The figures on this page are the Signature Series figures, though. The newer model's specification hasn't been collected into the comparison set used here, so nothing on this page ranks it.
Thirteen ratings at $141.00
Thirteen owners rate it 4.9. That's a small sample, small enough that the average carries little, and it's worth saying so on a page whose whole argument is that published figures should be read with their conditions attached.
So the specification is the stronger document here, with one hole in it. Every figure but the maximum SPL arrives qualified, and the quiet end is documented better than the class usually manages.

Where a $141 condenser makes sense
A quiet room, a quiet source and no need for a switch. The noise floor is the reason to choose this microphone, and it's a reason that only appears when there is nothing else in the recording to mask it.
And loud sources are the limit. There's no pad, so 142 dB is the ceiling and the only way down is distance. And there's no filter, so a rumbling floor arrives intact. A Shure SM7B at $439 has both switches and 1.12 mV/Pa, which is a different instrument for a different room.
Inside its own price bracket the argument is simple arithmetic: nothing else at $141 publishes a single-digit noise floor, and the two microphones that beat it cost nine times as much.
