Laptop Mic Not Working: 34 of 69 Devices Carry Their Own

A laptop microphone sits behind two pinholes in the lid, and HP's component guide lists it as "Internal microphones (2)" — an array built into the display assembly rather than a part. Nothing about it can be unplugged, swapped, or held up to the light.
And that shape decides what "not working" is allowed to mean. Since nothing here is loose, the fault is a setting, a driver, or a second microphone that took the input first. But a microphone on the end of a cable is a different problem, and it fails at the connector instead.
Thirty of sixty-three bring a microphone of their own
There are 69 wearable cards collected here. Fifty-eight of them state whether there's a microphone inside, and thirty say yes: fourteen put it on the earpiece, nine name no location, four use a boom, and three hang it on the cable. Twenty-five of the thirty carry a price, and those run from $19 to $1,250, so neither price nor class predicts it. Apple's Mac guide lists the internal microphone as one row among all sound input devices, then keeps a second page for what happens next. Choose the built-in microphone in the Input options of Sound settings while a headset is plugged in, and "your selection may revert to the headset." The remedy given isn't a setting at all: unplug the headset first, then choose.
But nothing is broken in that story. The machine records, the driver loads, the array appears in the list, and the choice refuses to stay where it's put.
The $19 pair of Apple EarPods above is the cheapest of the thirty. B&H's listing describes answering calls and talking to Siri, both of which take a microphone, yet the key features name only the connection and the bass. A purchase made for listening arrives as an input device, though the card doesn't mention it much at all.
Seven plugs in sixty carry a voice, and one has nothing to send
Sixty cards state what the wired plug is, and seven say it's TRRS. The fourth contact is the conductor a voice travels back on, so a three-contact TRS plug doesn't carry it. Twenty-six cards say TRS outright, ten say "3.5 mm" without naming the contacts, and eleven say "No Wired Audio Support". Those eleven arrive over Bluetooth, and there's no plug to pull out at all.
Then the seven split. A Sennheiser HD 400S at $89.95 states a TRRS plug and a built-in microphone of "No", which is a four-contact connector with nothing to put on the fourth wire. Going the other way, a Focal Bathys and a Beats Solo 4 both carry a microphone and a plain TRS plug, and both also carry USB-C. On those two the microphone reaches a computer digitally or not at all. HP calls the hole in the side an "Audio-out (headphone)/Audio-in (microphone) combo jack" and adds that it connects an optional headset microphone but "does not support optional standalone microphones." One socket doing two jobs, and only a four-contact plug does both of them.
So the jack decides less than it looks like it does. But what it certainly does is give the operating system a reason to move the input somewhere else.
The mute switch with a lamp of its own
HP lists a "Microphone mute light" among the indicators above the keyboard, and its two states read "On: Microphone is off" and "Off: Microphone is on." The switch behind that lamp is hardware, and it's below the software entirely. Windows goes on reporting the microphone as present, enabled and unmuted the whole time it's cutting.
Microsoft reaches the same place from the software side, opening its list of remedies with a physical one: if the headset has a mute button, make sure it isn't active. A Logitech H390 puts that button in a module on the cord, where a knee or the arm of a chair finds it by accident. Two switches, then, and neither one's reporting upward. And the lamp on the key is the only honest indicator either of them's got.
Intel Smart Sound Technology, and a device with no name
Dell's knowledge base names one cause exactly, and it's a driver. The internal microphone vanishes from Device Manager when Intel Smart Sound Technology, the audio controller together with its OED counterpart, carries a yellow warning mark. Dell's order of work is to remove both devices along with their software, take every Windows update, restart, and only then install the audio drivers listed against that machine's service tag.
Microsoft's instruction for a microphone Windows can't see runs the same way: uninstall the audio device from Device Manager with "attempt to remove the driver" ticked, restart, and let Windows put it back.
Both procedures rebuild the software that gives the array a name, and they do it for one reason. From the settings panel, an array with no name and an array with no wires look exactly alike.
The order that separates a setting from a dead array
Four questions, arranged so each one clears the most ground.
- Is anything plugged in or paired? Unplug the headset, disconnect the earbuds, then look at the input list again. Apple documents the reversion outright, though Bluetooth performs it with no cable to notice.
- Does the lamp on the microphone key show anything? A hardware mute sits above the operating system and stays invisible to it.
- Is the array in the list at all? A microphone that appears has a software fault, while one that doesn't has a driver fault, and Intel Smart Sound Technology is the first name to check.
- Is the application using the device the system chose? Discord alone stacks five layers above the microphone, and every layer keeps its own idea of which device is right.
The first question is the one that gets skipped, though it costs nothing and accounts for most of the reports. A meeting held in a browser adds a permission the settings panel never shows, so the same array can pass every question here and stay silent there.
Four routes to a second input

Every row buys a second input rather than a repair. So the array in the lid is soldered to the machine, so the studio route adds an interface and a power question on top, and the rest simply stop asking the lid to work.
