Earphone One Ear Not Working: Wired and Wireless Fail Differently

One side plays, the other is silent. The fix depends on a question most guides skip, which is whether a cable carries the sound or a radio does.
Two faults share one symptom, and they share nothing else
Sony's page for wired headphones and Apple's page for AirPods describe the same complaint and agree on nothing.
Sony's list is about a path: is the plug seated, is it in the headphone jack rather than an audio-in or microphone socket, is the source volume up, is the signal stereo at all. Apple's list is about state: is the case charged, do both units charge, does the silent one play when the working one is shut in the case, does a reset bring it back.
Neither list would fix the other's fault. A charging step is meaningless on a cable, and a plug-seating step is meaningless on a radio link. So the first move isn't a check at all. It's deciding which of the two machines the silence belongs to.
On a wired pair, each side owns its conductor
Below the Y-split, the left and the right run on separate wires inside one sleeve.
That's why a wired failure is usually one-sided. A conductor breaks where it flexes most, but it takes only its own side with it. The break is rarely visible. The copper parts inside insulation that still looks intact, and the sleeve holds the two ends close enough that the connection returns when the cable lies a certain way.
For a broken conductor, the side that went quiet carries no information. Left and right are electrically identical, though, and the fault landed on whichever one was bent more often. One wired cause does pick a side, but it isn't a fault at all, and the source section below has it.
The split decides whether one side goes quiet or both
On this design a single cable reaches the headband, and the division happens out of sight.
Everything above the division is shared. A break there kills both sides, but the symptom's a dead pair, not a quiet one. Everything below it is single-sided, and a break there produces exactly the complaint this page is about. The plug is shared too, though, and that's why a bad plug never presents as one-sided silence.
And that gives a free first test. If moving the cable near the plug changes both sides together, the fault sits before the split. If it changes one, it sits after.
A detachable cable answers the question in a minute
Some earphones let the cable come off at the earpiece.
Where that's possible, though, the diagnosis is no longer a guess. Swap the left and right cable ends between earpieces. If the silence follows the cable, the driver is fine and a replacement cable fixes the pair. If the silence stays with the earpiece, the cable is fine and the driver or its solder joint has gone.
On a pair with a fixed cable the same logic still applies, but the test costs a second pair of headphones and a known-good source instead of thirty seconds.
The test is available more often than not. Of the 35 headphones collected here whose listings state a cable design, 25 use a detachable cable and seven a fixed one; two more carry no wired input at all. One is listed as single-sided, which means one earpiece feeds the other through a short link, the wired version of the relay described below, and the same trap when the far side goes quiet.
Before the cable: four causes that sit in the source
Sony's list begins away from the headphones entirely, though every item on it's free to check.
The plug may be in the wrong socket. A device with several jacks can offer an audio-in or a microphone input beside the headphone output, and a plug in the wrong one produces thin, partial or one-sided sound rather than nothing.
The balance control may be off centre. Apple names the exact path on iOS: Settings, Accessibility, Audio/Visual, Balance, and the slider belongs in the middle. A balance pushed to one end silences the other side on every pair of headphones the device drives, and that's the tell, because the fault follows the device rather than the headphones.
The source may be mono. Here Sony is specific in a way that matters. A mono device outputs sound to the LEFT side only, so the side that goes quiet is always the right. The labelling convention on older equipment carries the warning, where a jack marked EARPHONE is generally mono and one marked HEADPHONE is generally stereo.
An accessory may be in the path. An extension cable or an inline remote is a joint, and joints fail, and Sony's instruction is to remove them and plug the headphones straight into the player. If the fault clears, the accessory needed the repair, not the headphones.
On true wireless, the two sides are not equals
The right earbud connects to the phone and relays audio to the left one. Bose says so plainly for the SoundSport Free.
And that single sentence changes the diagnosis. A silent left bud on a relay design can mean the left bud failed, or it can mean the link between the buds failed while the right one carries on normally. The same silence on the right bud means something else entirely, though, because the phone's connection ends there.
So on wireless, unlike wired, which side went quiet is evidence. Bose's own instruction follows from it, which is to use the right one when using a single earbud, because the left has nothing to connect to on its own.
Silence that is a setting rather than a fault
In-ear detection stops playback when an earbud comes out. Bose names it as the cause on the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds page.
The same page adds the part that turns this into a support case, because detection also trips when the eartips and stability bands don't fit correctly. The earbud's in the ear, but the sensor disagrees, and playback stops. Nothing is broken, and resetting won't change it, because the product is doing what it was told.
So the check is a setting, not a repair. In the Bose app, In-Ear Detection has an Auto Play/Pause switch, and turning it off separates a fit problem from a hardware one. A PS5 console ships two settings that mute the controller mic on purpose, and one of them fires at the moment a voice chat starts.
Apple's isolation test, and why it generalises
Close the lid on the working unit and play audio into the silent one. Apple's procedure ends with that step, and it's the one worth copying.
And that removes the other side from the system entirely. If the silent unit now plays, the unit works and the pairing or the balance between them was at fault. If it stays silent with nothing else connected, the pairing isn't the problem and the unit is.
And the principle's older than wireless. Every useful test in this list works by taking one variable out: shut the good bud in the case, swap the cable ends, plug into a different source. What all of them share is that the answer arrives as a change, not as an opinion about what the sound's like.
Where the money starts
A replacement cable costs a fraction of a replacement pair. And that's what puts the detachable-cable test first on any earphone that allows it.
A failed driver doesn't have that option. Neither does a broken conductor inside a fixed cable, where the repair means opening a moulded strain relief that was designed never to open. On wireless, a single bud can often be replaced alone, and Apple's page points to exactly that path once a reset fails.
The order that saves the most money is the order of these sections: decide wired or wireless, then take one variable out at a time, and only then decide whether what's left is worth repairing.
