The verdict: worse on paper than in fact
The HS5 looks like the weakest of its own family on paper, 74 Hz against 43 Hz for the HS7, but that comparison isn't real. The two numbers are read at different points on the slope. 74 Hz is a −3 dB figure and 43 Hz a −10 dB one. Yamaha itself publishes only the −10 dB reading for these three monitors, where the family lines up as 54, 43 and 38 Hz. The −3 dB figure reaches the HS5's listing from elsewhere, though its siblings' listings carry no level at all. Everything below follows from reading a specification by its columns rather than by its numbers.
What it is
A powered two-way studio monitor, with a 5-inch woofer, a 1-inch dome tweeter and two amplifiers built in. That's 45 watts for the low end, 25 for the high, 70 watts in total. Sold singly, not in pairs, which is normal for this category though it surprises people who expect a boxed stereo set.
Powered, or active, means the amplifier is inside and matched to the drivers at the factory. There's no separate amplifier to buy, no impedance matching to get wrong.
Two-way means the signal is split in two and sent to two drivers, bass and midrange to the woofer, treble to the tweeter. The split here happens at 2 kHz.
Studio monitor is a claim about intent. The design aims to reproduce what's on the recording rather than to flatter it. No published specification proves it, for these or for an Audio-Technica M50x sold on the same claim, but none of the numbers below should be read as evidence of it.
A black box with a white cone
A black MDF box, small enough for a desk, with a white-coned woofer that has become the visual shorthand for the category. The port is on the back, as are both inputs and the two trim switches.
What 46 owners report
Seven owners out of 46 rated it below four stars, giving 4.4 overall. Forty-six ratings is a thin sample, and this one is spread wider than the average suggests. Three of those seven went to two stars or one. But the distribution is here so it can be read rather than taken on the average alone.
The specification trap, in one product line
Here is the low-frequency figure each model publishes, at the maker and at the shop that sells it:

A frequency limit is the point at which output has fallen by some stated amount. Choose −10 dB instead of −3 dB and the same box reaches lower on paper, because the measurement is allowed to end further down the slope. Twenty hertz separate the two readings, and there's no physics in between.
Which of the two Yamaha publishes takes reading the table by its columns. The specification page lists six models side by side, namely HS5, HS5I, HS7, HS7I, HS8, HS8I. The row headed frequency range at −10 dB carries values only in the plain columns. The rows headed frequency response at −10 dB and at −3 dB carry values only in the I columns, the installation versions. So 74 Hz at −3 dB belongs to the HS5I. Yamaha's brochure for the series settles it. Every model in it is given one figure, headed −10 dB, but −3 dB doesn't appear on any page.
The shop is the party publishing both bases for the plain model, and doing it properly, with each level named beside its number. But for the HS7 and HS8 the same shop prints one figure and doesn't name a level. That's the reverse of the usual direction, and it's the trap a Shure SM81 page describes for maximum SPL, arriving from the other side. Here the dealer carries the condition and the maker's own comparison table hides which column it belongs to.
What follows is practical and unchanged by whose figure it is. Comparing the HS5's 74 Hz against the HS7's 43 Hz overstates the difference between them by nine hertz, because those two numbers come from different measurements. On the one basis Yamaha publishes for both, the gap is 54 Hz against 43. A Yamaha HS8 is listed at 38 Hz on that same −10 dB basis, so the three monitors do line up against each other, provided the comparison uses the figure the maker actually prints for all of them rather than the one the dealer prints for one. A maker can also disagree with itself, and Sennheiser gives the Momentum 4's microphone 80 Hz at −3 dB in its manual and 50 Hz with no basis in its own store. The JBL is the opposite case and the useful one. It publishes both bases too, so it can be set against the HS5 twice over. At the strict end it is 49 Hz against 74 Hz, and at the loose end 43 Hz against 54 Hz. The JBL reaches lower either way, by 25 Hz on one reading and 11 Hz on the other, and it costs $50 less.
And that's the specification trap in miniature. The same two speakers, compared honestly twice, differ by 25 Hz or by 11 Hz depending only on which line of the datasheet both sides quote from.

What else the numbers say
And amplifier power adds up, which is rarer than it should be. 45 W to the woofer plus 25 W to the tweeter equals the 70 W total quoted. Where a listing gives amplifier sections and a total that don't reconcile, one of them is marketing.
Input sensitivity is −10 dBu. That's the consumer line level, though, not the +4 dBu professional standard, and the two sit 14 dB apart. Feeding this monitor from a professional interface output means running that output low. The alternative is a hot input and a noise floor that wasn't there before.
And the trim controls are shelves, and they aren't tone controls. Low shelf: −4 to 0 dB at 500 Hz. High shelf: −2 to +2 dB at 2 kHz. Both move in equal steps. The low shelf only cuts, which gives away its purpose. A monitor placed against a wall gains bass from the boundary, and this takes it back out.
5.3 kg, third lightest of the 5 studio monitors here with a stated mass, under a JBL 305P MkII at 4.7 kg and an Edifier MR4 whose 4.5 kg is a figure for the pair, and whose whole listing is priced that way too. Five is too few for a median to mean anything, and we aren't going to pretend otherwise.
Sold singly, ported at the back
Sold singly, so the real price is double the sticker. The rear port makes wall placement worse, though the low shelf exists precisely because of that. Consumer input level limits what it pairs with cleanly. And the deepest problem is the one the datasheet creates. The number most people buy on, how low it goes, is the one that's least comparable across brands.
Right for a small room, wrong for a spec sheet
A small room is the case this monitor was built for, where a 5-inch woofer is the right size, though the extra output of a 7-inch would only excite the walls. The trim shelves matter here more than they look. A monitor that can only cut bass is a monitor designed to sit somewhere imperfect.
A bad buy for anyone comparing on the published low-frequency figure alone. Against the JBL 305P MkII, compared on whichever basis both of them state, the JBL reaches lower for less money. Against its own siblings, it isn't as far behind as the datasheet suggests.
